Lab Connect

Lab Connect is lab-grade temperature and humidity monitoring for forensic laboratories — refrigerators, freezers, and evidence storage — built explicitly around ISO/IEC 17025 and FBI QAS requirements rather than adapted from a generic building-monitoring product.

What it does

It watches storage conditions continuously, alerts when they drift out of band, and keeps a defensible record that an assessor can be handed on demand. The design goal throughout is defensibility: not merely knowing that a freezer went warm, but being able to prove afterwards exactly what was recorded, when, and against which calibration.

Key capabilities

  • Per-sensor thresholds — a single device can monitor a refrigerator zone and a freezer zone against completely different limits.
  • Excursion workflow — detect, notify, escalate, acknowledge, record corrective action, close. An excursion is a case to be worked, not just an email.
  • Calibration management — NIST-traceable calibration tracking, recalibration-due status, and intermediate checks. The device reports raw resistance together with the identity of the calibration in force at the moment of capture, so a reading that was buffered during an outage is still corrected with the calibration that actually applied when it was taken — not whichever one happens to be current when it finally arrives.
  • Tamper-evident audit log — hash-chained, with sliceable CSV and JSON export for assessors.
  • Outage intelligence — a site-wide power or network cut is correlated into one incident rather than paging separately on every sensor, and a failure in an upstream bridge is reported as that failure instead of as a flood of unrelated sensor alarms.
  • Access control — multi-tenant, MFA, per-tenant SSO, and session handling suited to criminal-justice environments.
  • Physical and logical organisation — laboratories nest to arbitrary depth (site, wing, floor, unit) with tenant-defined level names, while disciplines are carried as orthogonal tags. "Every DNA freezer, statewide" is a tag query, not a rigid folder path.

Current status

The software is a comprehensive, well-tested prototype. The dashboard, audit export, calibration management, per-sensor thresholds, outage correlation and authentication are all built. Sensor firmware has been drafted and validated against the live gateway.
